2008 Formula Extreme
Round 3: 30th May - 1st June
Winton Raceway VIC

Round 3 of the ASC FX Cup was held at Winton over the weekend of the 31st May / 1st June. Having completed test at Winton DRT had found a reliable setup for the Victorian round and were confident of a good result. During Friday practice Dean steered the K8 GSXR around the demanding Winton circuit and showed a very competitive pace in readiness for Saturday qualifying.

Saturday provided a positive result for DRT’s prospects, qualifying on the second row in P5. Race 1 and Dean launched the K8 when the red light went out immediately making his intentions known by moving from 5th to 3rd into Turn 1. However as the month of May ended that afternoon so did DRT’s good fortune, with Dean suffering a Lorenzo style (don’t let go!) highside on Lap 3 of Race 1 (click here for video)

With several tubes of Voltaren (aka “the lotion”) applied and a good nights rest DRT took on Sunday’s frivolities with renewed vigour as we tried to reclaim some ground from Race 1’s DNF. It would seem the highside Gods weren’t happy to leave it there though; once again in a promising 3rd place it all slipped away with the rear wheel of #88 on Lap 1 of Race 2 (click here for video)

Thanks to the boys and girls at Race Safe for checking over Dean and allowing him to continue in Race 3, which resulted in a consolidating 4th place and 17 points for the round. DRT were pushed back in the overall standings from 5th to equal 8th with Michael Dibb.

There was no time to cry about the disapointment from Winton as we took off for Queensland on Friday the 6th of June for a weekend of testing at QLD Raceway. The Queens Birthday weekend provided the ideal opportunity to “get back on the horse” and complete 3 straight days of testing at the lumpy & bumpy Queensland track. Massive thanks to Rod Churchward for towing our equipment straight from Winton to enable our testing at QR the following weekend.
With a few logisticall setbacks overcome we arrived at QR early on Saturday morning for the first ride day. Day 1 of testing confirmed our fears that the #88 monster had sustained some structural damage during Round 3 the weekend prior, Dean commenting how easily it turned right and how comparatively hard it was to go left! Unlike most things these day’s it’s not possible to order a silver bullet for bent frames over ebay, so testing went on with a bent bike which no doubt resented all of us for the unfair treatment!
Day 2: ride day 2, and after a couple of spring changes and other minor adjustments Dean was feeling good on the bike, rolling off some competitive lap times compared to last years FX round at QR. Day 3 was the Queensland Raceway “Interclub” Series Round 2 and we had entered in the Superbike Class, remaining on the FX Control tyres. Local man Josh Houwen proved he would be fast at the National round in July, taking 2nd place for the round. DRT took 3rd place and Dean set a great PB at QR in the process.
With testing complete for Round 4 DRT are taking a break from the track and took the opportunity to share our experiences from the 2008 season with the Subaru Impreza WRX Club. President Darren Golding invited DRT to their club meeting during the week and we were also privelidged to have Jake from Bitch’n Bitumen along with us to talk bikes and racing.  We’d like to thank eveyrone for their interest and attention!
Round 4 of the ASC Titles will be held at Queensland Raceway on 10th–13th July.

Round 2 Victorian State Titles

Round 2 of the Victorian State Titles were held at Winton Raceway on the weekend of the 3rd and 4th May. DRT were on the pace during Friday practice circulating the tough Winton circuit in the 1.27 / 1.28’s.

DRT took the K8’s successful practice setup into qualifying on Saturday morning and were pleased to be back on the front row – a terrific result on the Formula Extreme Control Tyres with most of the field running slicks and other modifications that are not allowed in the FX Cup.

DRT supporters were treated to one of Dean’s signature hole shots at the start of Race 1 (click here for vid). Dean held the lead through the S’s before being overtaken by eventual winner Chris Trounson. The race was closely contested for second, third and fourth place. Dean, Steve Tozer and Michael Blunden exchanged places several times until a mistake saw Dean relegated to 5th place. He then worked hard to get back to the group and made a last lap move to take 4th place.

With a gearing change undertaken before Sunday warm up DRT were hoping to improve on the team’s solid Race 1 result. Race 2 saw Dean punch off the line with another great start before Chris Trounson made a close pass into Turn 1 to take and hold the lead to the finish.

Second place was fought out between Preston Club members Steve Tozer and Dean with the pair trading positions on a number of occasions, highlighting the differing strengths of the two 2008 model Japanese super bikes in the process. In the end it was the sheer grunt of the Dynoverks Racing / Mick Hone Suzuki K8 GSXR that passed the chequered flag to take second place before Steve on the 08 R1.

Race 3 was going to be a thriller and it didn’t disappoint. Dean made another scorching hole shot (click here for vid) and lead most of lap 1 until Chris Trounson took the lead to win the race. Dean and Steve Tozer battled it out for 2nd and 3rd (click here for vid), the race coming down to a sprint to the line ending in a photo finish. The team from Computime reviewed video footage that resulted in Dean taking 2nd place from Steve Tozer by just 0.002 seconds!

Race 3 also provided Dean with an unexpected adrenalin hit when he almost high-sided the K8 at the back section of the track (click here for vid). Fortunately for Dean and DRT he managed to land back in the seat and get on the gas without injury, damage or race position loss.

Teammate Chas Hern wasn’t so lucky during qualifying, his weekend ending after a spectacular high-side at Turn 2. DRT wishes Chas a speedy recovery and preparation for ASC Round 3 at the end of May.

The weekend was a great success for DRT and has provided plenty of confidence heading into Round 3 of the Formula Extreme competition at Winton in a few weeks time. DRT took 2nd place overall with Dean now leading the Superbike Championship by 33 points from Scott Pertzel.

Special thanks to Rocket who made the trip down from Sydney to help in the pits at the state round – much appreciated.
Round 3 of the ASC Titles commences on the 30th May at Winton.
